I agree -- it's a bit reductive to say that gandhi was awful for India/pakistan relations (or for india) because he helped create pakistan. That's not the only role he had...and as you mentioned, if the country and the people in power listened to his ideas of living simply and educating, etc, india would be in a very different place now.

I also love the idea of community living as you read in the Life Positive magazine. I hope to live like that soon, as i settle down.

Lastly -- have you heard of the idea of "Permaculture?" look it up (and i'll forward you some info too), i think it will really resonate with you.

(and great blog! so good to see your ideas in words that i can miles away in the U.S.)

Quite an outburst that. Not unlikely for us who have been fed on modern (western) concepts of development. It is important to live a more cheerful and fulfilling life-physically, spiritually, socially. This could be the guiding priciple for our economics, politics, et al. Coming from this perspective Gandhi appears to be simple yet accomplished 'liver of life'. He looked for his messages in birds, animals and trees, indeed nature all around - which he refers to being a puppet in the hands of the almighty.

Today is not what it is to live - our souls are mangled in blaring horns, quarrelsome relations, troubled interactions, unrewarding daily chores and an unfulfilling (dissatisfied) work.

We are spending life to earn a living...

Very stimulating once again Rahul (though the passages on holistic healing may be ascribing ideas and ideals to Gandhi that he may not have shared). Gandhi was a complex person and it may be reductionist to 'like' or 'dislike' his worldview -- treat him like a man responding to a complex environment and then judge him on whether or not he stayed true to his principles or if he was ready to abandon them at the slightest pretext for short-term gains. Then ask yourself -- are these principles I respect and admire?
